Advancing Stability and Growth at VCCCD
Since elected to the Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees in 2022, Lou Lichtl has focused on restoring professional standards and financial health to the district. He has worked to ensure the Board operates with transparency and follows clear guidelines to best serve the students and the community.
-
Drawing on his extensive experience in school administration, governance, and policy development, Lou has played a leading role in strengthening, updating, and implementing Board policies and procedures. He has worked to ensure that Board actions follow established protocols, promote accountability, and remain focused on effectively serving students, employees, and the community.
-
Lou has prioritized responsible fiscal stewardship by advocating for smarter, more strategic use of District resources and strengthening financial reserves. His focus has been on maintaining fiscal stability, identifying opportunities for greater efficiency, and ensuring public funds are used responsibly to support the District’s long-term financial health and its commitment to student success.
-
Lou provided leadership during the District’s accreditation process, helping the Board reestablish sound governance practices and ensure compliance with accreditation standards and Board policies. He advocated for greater accountability, adherence to established protocols, and effective oversight to help protect the District’s accreditation status and maintain public confidence in VCCCD.
-
As a product of the Community College system and the first in his family to earn a college degree, Lou understands firsthand the doors it can open for students and working adults. Throughout his career in public education—including serving as Principal of Thousand Oaks High School and Assistant Superintendent of the Conejo Valley Unified School District—Lou worked to expand access to educational opportunities for every student. He was a strong advocate for dual enrollment, helping create pathways that allow high school students to earn college credit, explore career options, and get a head start on their future. Lou believes every student—regardless of background or financial circumstances—deserves meaningful opportunities to succeed, and he is committed to ensuring our community colleges remain accessible, affordable, and focused on student success.
“I have known Lou Lichtl for more than two decades—first as the principal who led and cared for my children, and now as the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) Trustee representing the very seat I held for 12 years. As a parent leader and SSC Chairperson at both Redwood Middle School and Thousand Oaks High School, I saw firsthand Lou’s integrity, strong leadership, and genuine commitment to students and families.
During his first term on the VCCCD Board, Lou has brought that same experience, vision, and sense of responsibility to our community colleges. I am proud to support Lou and am confident he will continue to protect the integrity, excellence, and future of the VCCCD.”
